MZILIKAZI District successfully defended their National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) Bulawayo Metropolitan provincial track and field tournament by amassing 64 medals comprising 29 gold, 21 silver and 14 bronze.

Mzilikazi overtook Reigate District, which had ended the opening day of the athletics competition at the top of the medals’ table on Monday.

Reigate ended as runners-up with 23 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze medals followed by Imbizo Khami and Bulawayo Central districts.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Provincial Education Director Dan Moyo praised Naph for adhering to the National Sports Policy by organising the provincial track and field competitions.

Moyo said the government had created a standalone Sports Ministry having recognised the immeasurable contribution sport has made to the development of the country.

“Naph as an association has also realised the contribution sport does to the development of the child physically, socially, morally and mentally. Naph has been mandated to see that sport is developed from the grassroots level and that a spirit of sportsmanship is nurtured in these young boys and girls,” said Moyo.

Naph Bulawayo chairman Bongani Sibanda said they had also selected a provincial athletics’ team that will start training on Monday next week in preparation for the national championships in Redcliff in two weeks’ time.

The National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) will also hold their provincial event at White City Stadium tomorrow.
