THE Namibian duo of Corny Stam and Andries Baard were crowned overall winners in the Pairs competition of the Zimbabwe National Bowls tournament in Bulawayo yesterday.Both played an exciting encounter in the final against David Bryan and Mark Fieldus of Zimbabwe who they defeated 19-9 to win the Pairs. In the first minutes of the match Baard upped his game by 50 percent as  he was on the jack (white target) in most ends.

“We were 14-0 in the eight ends in the beginning of the game and my lead Baard was up in his shot, he was 50 percent on the jack probably by every end.

“We were very happy to win and we enjoyed the hospitality that we received from some of the Zimbabwean bowlers, they made us feel at home.

“We play for a bowling club that has only 20 players so we enjoyed the exposure which was only possible through our sponsors Powerline Africa, Rubicon Security and Santiago Company.

“We are leaving tomorrow and we are looking forward to another remarkable tournament in Zimbabwe,” said Stam.

Zimbabwe’s Bryan and Fieldus grabbed silver in the Pairs.

Bryan said their last match was tough but they are happy they took second  position.

In the women’s section in the Pairs, Hillside Bowling Club scooped a gold medal while the visiting Botswana side finished second.
Old Miltonians’ Jane Rigby and Mel James settled for bronze.

In the Triples competition in the women’s category Alexandra Sports Club of Harare were the overall winners after defeating Old Miltonians 22-14.

Old Miltonians grabbed silver while  Hillside settled on bronze.
