LOBENGULA Hall will tomorrow play host to the Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association’s national championships which will be used to select the country’s representatives at the December African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games.

Bulawayo will be home to the regional competition that will run from December 5-14.

Zimbabwe’s African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games boxing assistant coach Stephen Masiyambumbi said 18 boxers will be shortlisted and will later be trimmed to 12.

“We expect all the provinces to send boxers so that junior boxers can be selected for the December Games while the seniors are in the running for next year’s All-Africa Games to be held in Congo-Brazzaville.

“There are boxers that we have been monitoring throughout the year for the December Games and they have to justify their inclusion by winning on Saturday,” Masiyambumbi said.

Some of the boxers that have been identified for the Youth Games include Matabeleland North’s Ndodana Ncube, Trade Nkomozabo of Masvingo as well as the Nketa duo of Emmanuel Katsvaruvare and Samson Masiyambumbi.

The national championships which are being organised by Lobengula Boxing Club and sponsored by Revival Motorways are also part of Bulawayo’s 120 years celebrations.

Lobengula Boxing Club coach Anderson Sibanda said they were happy to be playing host to the national championships and said he hoped residents will come in numbers.

“Our idea was to have a club competition but the board asked us to host a national competition,” said Sibanda.
