National sports awards moved to next month

THE 2016 Annual National Sports Awards have been postponed to next month due to “tight schedules” of some of the guests that had been invited.
However, indications are that the African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Games that start in Angola next week could have been the main reason.
The awards, meant to honour and celebrate outstanding achievements by the sports persons in terms of the SRC Act Chapter 25:15 of 1991 (section 19P), were initially slotted for December 14 in the capital but will now be held on January 20, 2017, according to a communiqué released by the Sports and Recreation Commission communications officer Tirivashe Nheweyembwa.
“The postponement was necessitated by a number of reasons such as the non availability of some of the guests that were targeted to grace the occasion and most of the National Sport Associations had indicated that their athletes and officials were not going to be available during the initially set date.
After consulting with the stakeholders involved with the organisation of the ANSA ceremony, we decided to defer the hosting of the ceremony from 14 December 2016 to 20 January 2017 in Harare,” reads the communique.
According to the SRC director of business development and marketing Daniel Kuwengwa all the other preparations and processes remain unchanged apart from the unveiling of the nominees which will now take place on January 13 next year.
“On behalf of the SRC board management and staff I would like to thank all stakeholders especially Delta Corporation for their understanding and hopefully the ceremony will be a huge success”, Kuwengwa said.
World Boxing Council international welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi is the reigning Zimbabwe Sports Person of the Year.
