AMBITIOUS Dete team Nekatambe Cheetahs is etching closer to its dream of bringing topflight football to the small town after being crowned champions of the Zifa Mat North Division Three league.

The team, which is bankrolled by Chief Nekatambe, won the 16-team league and will be playing in the Zifa Mat North Division 2A league next year.

Cheetahs were presented with their $400 prize money, trophy and winners’ medals at an awards ceremony held at Chezhou Primary School in Dete on Saturday.

Runners-up Zebras FC received $270, while third-placed Maganyana got $200.

The rest of the teams received varying amounts courtesy of the league sponsors Painted Dog Conservation, who have been partners of the Mat North Third Division league since 2006 and also cater for referees’ fees and administration costs.

Cheetahs’ promotion means Dete’s football footprints are becoming more visible in the province, as they will now join Hotspurs Leopards, Iwisa Sparrows and Shumba Stars in the Mat North Division 2A league.

Guest of honour at the awards ceremony Archbishop Pius Ncube urged the young footballers to be focused and shun drug abuse.
