off tomorrow morning.
The golfers last week took part in the Hwange Chaferely Open, which was won by Tongoona Charamba. The tournament is the second leg of the NetOne series, which held its first tournament in Bulawayo and will have the final at Borrowdale Brooke. The local professionals will take part in the US$10 000 purse tournament.
NetOne marketing manager Ellen Muchemwa said their sponsorship of the tourney was one way of giving back to the society.
“This is one of our social responsibilities to the community and we aim to see the development of sport. NetOne prides itself in its association with this high profile sport,” Muchemwa said.
NetOne Managing Director, Reward Kangai, said their investment was justified because golf was growing in this country.
“We are confident in the growth of the golfing profession hence our investment into the sport since 1999. We are proud to be the biggest sponsor of golf in the country, especially through enhancing the professional careers of many golfers who participate in our One Golf Classic Tour.
“These Pro-Ams are also good for our customers who are taught the good game by the professionals.
“NetOne has always aimed at providing an enabling environment for its customers to do better in golf. The Leopard Rock Classic is but another demonstration of our support of golf in this country and NetOne hopes to continue aiding the development of local golf talent, lifting sport to higher standards, in line with the rest of the world.”
Marc Cayeux will not be available to defend his title as he was involved in a near fatal road accident last year after he won the tournament. The 12th edition of the NetOne series will leave several top golfers featuring in what promises to be a battle royale. Leopard Rock is a par-71 international golf course and has five par five holes. Cayeux won on three-under-par score, having carded 68 and 71, last year.
Resurgent Charamba, fresh from winning his first major tournament of the season, remains the man to beat. Charamba will be hoping to see off the challenge of 46 golfers who have confirmed their participation in the tournament. Arch-rival Ignatius Mketekete is second on the order of merit and will be a big challenge in the eastern highlands.
