DEFENDING champions of the eight-team Thembalethu Foundation women’s soccer tournament, New Orleans, will know their opponents at today’s draw at Raylton Sports Club.

Besides the reigning champions, other teams that will go into the hat are Magwegwe Stars, Ubuntu, ZRP Bulawayo, Black Boots, Sobukhazi and Highlanders Royals.

The second edition of the competition is set for the weekend of December 9-10.

Thembalethu Foundation chairperson Fungai Nyamutukwa-Mpfeka, a former Mighty Warriors player and manager, said they will also conduct a draw for the four teams that will feature as curtain raisers at the event.

The curtain raisers are a team made up of former Mighty Warriors’ players, Bulawayo-based football legends, Baker’s Inn and Sports Journalists Association (Spoja) Southern Region.

“The stage is set for our draw and we have invited the teams to be represented by their captains and managers. We have made the tournament bigger by bringing in four curtain raising teams as we want to draw as many people as possible. Besides playing football, participants and girls from around the city will take part in a life skills workshop,” said Nyamutukwa-Mpfeka.

The women’s teams will be drawn into two groups, with the top two teams going through to the semi-finals.

Teams that get to the semi-finals will each get a complete 16-set playing kit.

The winners will get an extra playing kit and a trophy, while there will be medals for all participants.
