New schools to adopt new curriculum: Dokora Minister Lazarus Dokora

PRIMARY and Secondary Education Minister Lazarus Dokora says newly built schools should adopt the new education curriculum which will soon be implemented by the government.

The new curriculum is awaiting approval by Parliament.

“It’s important for new educational institutions to be guided by the findings of the curriculum review process when designing their school-based curriculum. Parents want their children to be self-reliant, job creators and learners who appreciate their culture and industriousness,” said Dokora.

He was addressing officials from his ministry during the official opening of Prestige High School in Cowdray Park last week.

Dokora said parents also wanted their children to learn Mathematics, Science, technical and vocational subjects and heritage.

“As school administrators sit down to design the school curriculum, it must be guided by the country’s economic blueprint, Zim-Asset, whose thrust is to transform the Zimbabwean society, ” he said.

Dokora said it was important for schools to produce entrepreneurs and inventors instead of people who aspire to be job seekers.

“We want scholars who aspire to be job creators and blue collar innovators who can spur economic growth. Prestige High School is one of the formal independent schools that will pilot the implementation of the new curriculum once the zero draft is discussed and approved by Parliament.

“The fact that the school is a newly established institution makes it more flexible in adopting the new curriculum as it comes on stream,” he said.

Dokora said he was glad that the new curriculum included arts and culture.

“The curriculum incorporates arts and culture, guidance and counselling into the mainstream curriculum. Therefore, students enrolled at Prestige High School will have a rare opportunity to explore their cultural activity but in a mainstreamed learning area.

“I strongly believe that such a set up will promote the teaching of the concept of Ubuntu so that as Zimbabweans we’re identified as a people with a rich culture and self identity,” said Dokora.

He said the curriculum also emphasises on the need for students to be given an environment where they can fully develop their academic, sporting and artistic skills.
