THE National Handling Services (NHS) has secured 25 hectares of land in Victoria Falls to build 80 housing units for its workers and a business centre.

NHS acting human resources manager Mr Sam Madzore revealed this during the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development strategic planning workshop in Bulawayo on Tuesday.

The strategic planning workshop, which began on Monday, ends tomorrow. In his presentation to the delegates, Mr Madzore said the proposed project was expected to commence next year starting with the construction of NHS staff accommodation on a piece of land near the Victoria Falls International Airport.

The 25 ha piece of land was secured from Hwange Rural District Council.

“With regards to the land, the land that we wanted to secure was to have staff accommodation in Victoria Falls because one of the major cost drivers for us is the movement of staff from the suburbs to the airport.

“We are happy to report that we have finalised with the Hwange Rural District Council and we have been allocated a piece of about 25 ha of land. This is the land close to the airport and we are going to build staff houses,” he said.

Mr Madzore said the first phase of the project would focus on staff housing while the second phase of the programme will see the development of a business centre.

“We are informed by the interest that has been generated at Victoria Falls International Airport. As has been reported by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) there are so many airlines and us as a cargo handler we have to be prepared for that, that’s why we are moving strategically,” he said.

“The second phase is going to focus on a business centre where we are going to incorporate guest houses and a training centre and all these are aimed at managing our cost and also improving our revenues.”

Following the securing of the land, the NHS in 2018 will move onto the next stage of servicing of the 25 ha piece of land. As part of efforts to improve its operational efficiency, the cargo handling firm also plans to introduce self-checking facilities at the airports.
