THE Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) reached the halfway mark at the weekend, with Shurugwi-based Nichrut leading the table following a 2-0 win over TelOne at Peak Mine Stadium.

The win extended their lead at the top of the table to four points. The league now takes a two-week break, with action resuming on August 5.

Nichrut coach, John Nyikadzino, is happy his side reached the halfway stage topping the league table.

Teams that topped the log at the halfway stage, apart from Blanket Mine last season, have gone on to clinch the title and secure automatic promotion to the Premier Soccer League. Blanket Mine were beaten to the title by Shabanie Mine last season.

“I am happy this is the last game of the first half of the season and consistency is there now. Hopefully, we won’t be affected by this two-week break and continue from where we left so that at the end of the day we finish among the top four teams,” said Nyikadzino.

Nyikadzino is not new to the championship race in the CSL after breaking records in the 2013 season when he guided airmen Chapungu back into the Premiership.

Chapungu finished the season with a record 77 points; the highest ever accumulated by a team promoted from the CSL since its inception in 2010.

Chapungu also scored a record 72 goals.

Results: Nichrut 2–0 Telone, Black Eagles 2–0 Ivan Hoe, Whawha 2–1 ZRP Gwanda, ZPC Munyati 2–0 FC Platinum Under 19, Vumbachikwe 1–0 Makusha, Kwekwe Stars 3–0 Gwanda United, Border Strikers 3–1 Chrome Stars.
