ORGANIC fertilizer company, Nico Orgo, said yesterday it will invest $2 million in two new manufacturing plants to increase output to over 200,000 tonnes per annum. Nico Orgo is a fertilizer manufacturing company that produces mainly organic fertilizers. In an interview with New Ziana, the company’s commercial director Sylvester Tsikisayi said current production stood at 20,000 tonnes per annum.

“We have invested in two brand new plants to do production for us, we should be working on them by December this year and get them commissioned and running around February next year,” he said.

“Volumes are set to increase because if you look at the capacity of these plants, you can easily do up to 200,000 tonnes.”
Tsikisayi, however, did not reveal where the plant machinery would be sourced from.

He said farmers were gradually switching to using organic fertilizers, dumping conventional ones, hence the investment in new plants.
“At the moment demand is rising very fast. People see the benefit of using the fertilizers so every year we are increasing production.

“We are actually looking into the future because if you look at the potential the Zimbabwean market has got in terms of consumption of fertilizers, it is quite huge, so we are actually gearing ourselves to meet that demand in years to come,” he said.

Tsikisayi said the company was also making initiatives to penetrate regional markets where excess fertilisers would be sold.
“At the moment, we are working on those (initiatives to tap into the region), we have got interest coming from regional countries,” he said.

Nico Orgo also offers a wide range of organic products that include botanical pesticides and bio-stimulants.
These products address concerns about environmental degradation and the threat posed to human health as a result of the use of chemical based inputs.
Organic farming has emerged as a sustainable farming method in Zimbabwe as most farmers are now aware of the importance of organic fertilizers and their nutritional value. — New Ziana
