Nigerian runs over woman, damages 3 vehicles

with immigration officials and police officers who had ordered him to stop.
The officers wanted to check his citizenship status after suspecting he was an illegal immigrant.
Assistant Regional Immigration Officer Mr Evans Siziba yesterday confirmed the incident.
He said investigations were in progress.
Mr Siziba said the Nigerian, who managed to escape, was spotted by immigration officials and police carrying out a joint operation to flush out illegal immigrants.
The officers wanted to verify his papers and permit.
“He was spotted driving a green Nissan Sedan whose registration numbers are ABP 5624 and waved to stop but he did not take heed. Instead he drove off at high speed, resulting in the chase,” Mr Siziba said.
The suspected illegal immigrant reportedly reversed his car for more than 300 metres during the chase, from Leopold Takawira Street to Chinhoyi Street, along Robert Mugabe Road.
Mr Siziba said at the intersection of Nelson Mandela Avenue and Julius Nyerere Way, he rammed three vehicles – a commuter omnibus, Honda CRV and a Toyota Corolla – but did not stop.
During the chase, the suspect ran over a woman identified as Muchaneta Maosa. The woman, who was seriously injured, was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment.
In a related matter, two Nigerians have been arrested for violating the Immigration Act.
Christopher Chukwu alias Christopher Ngwenya and Gilbert Abumchi were arrested last week in separate incidents in the city.
Chukwu was arrested at the Gulf Shopping Complex after he failed to produce his identification particulars and permit.
He appeared at the Harare Magistrate courts yesterday and was fined US$50 or 20 days in prison. Chukwu was still in custody awaiting deportation.
Abumchi was arrested near Runhare House after failing to produce his identification particulars last week. He also appeared at the same courts yesterday and was fined US$100 or 20 days in prison. He was also still in custody awaiting deportation.
Meanwhile, an ex-senior immigration officer Alter Upenyu Nhidza has been arrested on allegations of stealing visa books worth over US$18 000 before fleeing to South Africa.
Nhidza was believed to have been selling the visa stickers to illegal immigrants in South Africa.
Mr Siziba said Nhidza was in the habit of stealing visas books before selling them to illegal immigrants. He fled the country to South Africa in 2009 and sought political asylum.
Nhidza, who was the officer-in-charge immigration at Kanyemba Border Post, was arrested last month after sneaking into Zimbabwe.
He was remanded out of custody on US$50 bail.
