NINE pupils were recently injured when pieces of flying asbestos cut and bruised them after strong winds damaged two primary schools in Bulilima District.

The winds blew off the roof of a classroom at Tjihanga Primary School in Nyele Ward on Monday while Ntoli Primary School in Gala Ward was damaged on Wednesday last week.

The nine pupils who are all from Ntoli Primary School were treated and discharged at Ntoli Clinic with one of them reported to have been severely injured. Bulilima District Administrator Ethel Moyo confirmed the two incidents.

She said the Civil Protection Committee was yet to visit the two schools to assess the extent of damage and deliberate on possible intervention measures. She said the committee was experiencing transport challenges.

Moyo said according to the report she received, a classroom block had been damaged at each school. Headman Manguba whose jurisdiction covers Ntoli Primary School said the incident occurred during learning hours.

“It was during learning hours on Wednesday and some pupils were gathered within the school yard. The area experienced severe winds which blew the roofing of a classroom block.

“Some of the asbestos were blown off and headed towards the pupils. The damage could have been worse but lucky enough there were some parents within the vicinity who advised the children to lie on the ground. A total of nine pupils were injured in the process. One of them is still in pain,” he said.
