THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) in Matabeleland North realises over $45 000 annually from farming projects at Anju Farm which is channelled towards the welfare of prisoners in the province.

Speaking on the sidelines of Matabeleland North Commissioner General’s goodwill event held in Lupane on Wednesday, the Officer Commanding Matabeleland North, Senior Assistant Commissioner Moddie Nkomo said farming projects were helping them to run their prisons.

“As Matabeleland we do not have any challenges, we have self-sustaining projects and each prison has about three hectares of land for farming. We have Anju Farm where we farm throughout the year and annually we make between $45 000 and $50 000,” said Snr Asst Comm Nkomo. “We don’t have starving prisoners. We are able to service our cars through the projects that we undertake as a province and I urge everyone to continue with their commitment.”

She urged Matabeleland North prison officers to work hard as a team regardless of rank as this will enhance effectiveness and improve efficiency.

“As Mat North we should work hard as a team, from junior officers to me. We should not consider rank and think we are more important because all the plans come from everyone including junior officers. So as Mat North we should continue in the same manner which has seen us being able to avert all the challenges,” she said.

The Commissioner General’s goodwill event is an annual programme which was initiated last year to cater for families of deceased ZPCS officers.
The programme helps orphans with school fees.

ZPCS Matabeleland North donated stationery, clothing and groceries to 11 orphans from the region.

“This programme was started last year by the Commissioner General Paradzai Zimondi to cater for orphans who were left by our fellow officers. The programme pays for their school fees and other grocery needs. Today’s event was meant to show them that we think about them during this festive period and we wanted to come here and have a good time with them,” Snr Asst Comm Nkomo.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Bulawayo Medical officer, Assistant Commissioner Shingirai Zengeni commended the ZPCS for a job well done and urged the ZRP to take a leaf from the goodwill fund. — @PrinceNkosy102
