NRZ launches technical college, offers diploma

THE National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) will start offering national diploma in technical and commercial courses in January next year following the launch of its technical college.

The parastatal’s acting General Manager, Lewis Mukwada officially launched the NRZ Technical College at the NRZ Training Centre in Bulawayo on Tuesday.

Mukwada said their training centre had been upgraded into a technical college with the government’s approval.

“On August 25 this year, the NRZ Training Centre was duly authorised by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, through the Curriculum Research and Development section, to train as a Non-Government Technical and Vocational Education and Training Institution for 12 courses at National Certificate level, but only seven will be offered upon opening,” said Mukwada.

He said the institution was continuing to serve its original mandate as spelt out in the NRZ training policy but had only extended that mandate to cover the requirements of a technical college.

“Our aim of this upgrading is to raise the standards of our trade men and women throughout the country by giving them better access to formal qualifications taking advantage of the Training Centre Infrastructure,” he said.

“The vision of the college is to offer a full range of technical and commercial courses at National certificate and National Diploma levels by the year 2018. In this regard the NRZ Technical College will soon be inviting applications for direct intake and skilled worker upgrading courses.”

He said the NRZ Training Centre was there to ensure that the right quality of people were available to meet the needs of the organisations  that has the second largest integrated workshops in the Sadc region, after South Africa.

He also said the training centre offered training to external organisations.

“NRZ has massive training infrastructure and a pool of experienced, and nationally rated lecturers which we expect to produce the best regionally.  Furthermore, attachment and accommodation for our students will be readily available as we have partnered with Hawkflight Construction and Aggregate properties for refurbishment of our structures,” he added.

“This college is fully committed to assisting industry develop requisite skills and knowledge necessary to maintain competitive advantage and ultimately ensure their organizational effectiveness in today’s highly competitive business world.”
