A third-year nursing student is battling for her life at Mpilo Central Hospital’s intensive care unit following a botched suicide attempt after she failed her exams.

Nyaradzo Chamisa, who allegedly drank rat poison and collapsed while at the City Hall in Bulawayo had been in a coma since last Thursday. She is, however, said to be recovering.

Chamisa is said to have told her friends since Tuesday that she was tired of life and wanted to die.

A source said on the day she attempted suicide, one of her friends saw her carrying rat poison and got suspicious.

The source said the friend followed Chamisa only to find her unconscious at an area near the City Hall.

Chamisa’s friend called one of her tutors identified only as Nyandoro who assisted in rushing her to hospital.

“Yes, I received a call that the girl had attempted to kill herself but I’ll not comment further on the issue. I’m too junior to comment, talk to the acting chief executive officer instead,” said Nyandoro.

The deputy principal tutor Nozipho Bhebhe also refused to comment on the incident. She advised this reporter to speak to the hospital’s acting chief executive officer, Leonard Mabandi.

An impeccable source said out of a class of 29 students, 15 students failed. The source said of the 15, only three were allowed to repeat hospital practice, the final year of the course. Once a student fails hospital practice, they are not allowed to continue with their studies.

Chamisa is among those that failed hospital practice.

Her mobile phone was last night unreachable and she is allegedly unable to speak.

Efforts to get a comment from her brother were futile as his mobile phone continuously went unanswered.

Mpilo acting chief executive officer Mabandi yesterday confirmed the incident.
