A LOCAL nurse Ms Vimbaishe Musvaburi has announced that she will stand as an independent candidate in Bulawayo South in next year’s general elections.

Ms Musvaburi (35) has been active on social media urging youths to vote in next year’s elections.

Last Friday she announced that she is eyeing Bulawayo South, which is currently held by Mr Eddie Cross of the MDC-T.

In an interview, Ms Musvaburi – who left her nursing job in South Africa – said she was ready to campaign.

“I know I have the ears to listen and definitely the capability to act upon issues, our issues and bring change to our communities. The youth in this constituency spend time at liquor stores drowning their sorrows in alcohol. As a matter of fact, we are now facing an extra problem which is alcohol abuse and addiction. I’m the rightful candidate because I’m for change,” she said.

Ms Musvaburi said youths should actively participate in shaping the country’s future.

“I believe that young people have to be in politics to bring change. We have to be the change that we want. We have to be involved. That is why I’m involved. The youth comprises 65 percent of Zimbabwe’s population. The youths need to understand they can lead themselves,” said Ms Musvaburi.

A mother of two, Ms Musvaburi said she started her education at Greenfield Primary School in Barham Green suburb in Bulawayo and then went to St James Girls High in Nyamandlovu for her secondary education.

After completing school, she went to the United Kingdom to train as a nurse.

“After completing my O-Levels, I moved to England where I was accepted for university studies without A-Level qualifications. I trained as a nurse between 2000 and 2003. During that period I also obtained a health studies diploma,” Ms Musvaburi said.

She worked in South Africa for some time and is now back home but said she cannot work as a nurse locally yet as she has to first write some examinations to practise at local health institutions.

Ms Musvaburi said she is now into women empowerment, running a Non-Governmental Organisation, Intombi, which assists women to set up their own businesses.

She joins prominent Harare lawyer Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, who earlier this year announced that she will be running as an independent candidate in Mount Pleasant, Harare.
