Nust introduces new fees payment system

Inline with the new system, the institution has computerised its registration for students and those students who pay less than 75 percent cannot be registered as they are automatically rejected.

In an interview yesterday, Nust director of information and public relations Mr Felix Moyo, said the registration system was expected to make it easier for students to clear their fees every semester and facilitate the smooth running of the institution.

He added that the computerised registration would eliminate human error and guarantee fairness to all students.

“We have introduced a computerised registration system that will reject students, who pay amounts below the minimum threshold.

“Students, who cannot pay fees in full, can now make a minimum down payment of 75 percent of the fees due at the beginning of every semester and pay the remaining 25 percent in instalments. If students do not pay the 75 percent, the system will automatically reject that entry,” he said, adding that each student would have an individualised account to avoid mix ups.

“The system does its own calculations for each student account and will not register students, who have paid less than 75 percent of the fees at the beginning of the semester. The new system is an advantage to both the students and the university.”

Mr Moyo described how in the past, students who failed to pay full fees were paying in instalments and were allowed to clear their arrears later.

That system, he said, made it difficult for some to clear their fees on time.

With the new payment plan, Mr Moyo said, those irregularities would be a thing of the past.

“As an institution we realised that students were struggling to clear their huge balances as some were  paying as little as 10 percent of the full fees at the beginning of the semester.

“We believe it makes sense for students to pay 75 percent at once and later clear 25 percent through a payment plan. This figure will be easier for our students to clear,” he said.

Mr Moyo urged those students who could to pay the stipulated 75 percent to approach the institution’s bursar, who will treat each case on its own merits.

Tuition fees at Nust range between $450 and $750 for undergraduate programmes.
