THE axe-wielding rapist who raped two National University of Science and Technology (NUST) students near the campus was yesterday sentenced to 30 years in jail. Passing the effective 30-year jail term, senior regional magistrate Collet Ncube said Nkomo had ruined his victims’ lives and therefore deserved a harsh sentence. He said what was aggravating was that one of Nkomo’s victims was a virgin.

“In passing sentence, l took into account that you did not only rape your victims but also robbed them of their valuables,” said Nkomo.

He said he was not suspending any portion of the sentence because Nkomo deserved to be locked away from society for a long period.

Trust Muduma, prosecuting, told the court that Nkomo of Bulawayo’s New Magwegwe raped his victims before robbing them. Nkomo who raped both his victims near the university campus, used an axe to threaten them.

The first victim who was aged 22 years old told the court that on November, 12, 2012 on her way to the university, she saw Nkomo approaching from behind.

When he caught up with her, they allegedly had a conversation about water problems the city was experiencing and the victim thought he was a student.

Nkomo then grabbed her neck and dragged her into the bush.

He ordered her to undress, but when she refused he picked up a stone and assaulted her before raping her once.

The student informed the university’s security guard and a report was made to the police.

On April 12, 2013, Nkomo raped another 20-year-old female student who was walking through the same area at around 10.30AM.

He suddenly grabbed her by the neck and warned her not to scream.

He instructed her to surrender all her belongings and told her to remove her clothes before raping her.

After committing the crime, he disappeared into the woods. The student narrated her ordeal to her sister and uncle and the matter was reported to the police.

Sometime last year, the first victim saw Nkomo in a commuter omnibus they were travelling in and she alerted another female passenger.

The two made a plan to tell the conductor once they arrived in town.

She alleged that Nkomo had stolen her phone and asked them to drive to the nearest police station and the student later told the police that Nkmo had infact raped her.

His second victim identified him at a parade.
