OBVIOUS Moyo won the Maphisa Coolland Spar 10km race on Saturday.
It was the inaugural event that attracted a big field to encourage the organisers to pledge to make it an annual event.
Moyo was the best athlete in the below 30 years of age category.
“We are happy with the turnout and enthusiasm shown by the locals. It is part of our social responsibility and we hope this may go a long way in tapping hidden talents.

“Athletics has grown to be a big employer with dozens of Zimbabwean athletes running as professionals abroad and earning good money. Our hope is some day we will have a national champion who would have come through this initiative in Maphisa,” said Obert Masara, an executive of the sponsoring company Hawkflight Construction who also own Coolland Spar in Maphisa.

Moyo hit the tape in 38 minutes. It was a comfortable win as the second runner home Tanson Chabangu was home in 41 minutes.
Third place went to Alaska Sibanda in 41 minutes 37 seconds.

Julius Mpofu of Tjehondo was fourth, clocking 42 minutes with Tyson Ncube fifth in 43 minutes.
For coming first Moyo took home R500 with second-placed Chabangu pocketing R200.

The other three, Sibanda, Mpofu and Ncube received consolation prizes.
Bakungile Ncube of Hakuna was the first woman home in 51 minutes. She was a minute faster than second-placed Tryphine Ncube of Sigodini Village with Sithembile Dube third in 52 minutes 38 seconds.

Ethel Ngwenya was fourth in one hour 34 seconds with Nomalanga Ndiweni settling for fifth in one hour 02 minutes.
In a rare occurrence in local sport, the women got a similar prize money to that of men. In most instances women get far much less than what men get at sporting tournaments.

In the men’s over 30s, Amos Moyo, 42, walked home with R500 after coming first in 40 minutes.
Archford Mnkandla of Mahetshe was second in 41 minutes 44 seconds.

Choice Mkhumbie of Maphisa was third, clocking 44 minutes.
Nkosilathi Mnkandla clocked 45 minutes for his fourth position while Julius Moyo was fifth in a poor time of 48 minutes.
Athletes ran from Maphisa to the 5km peg along the Kezi-Maphisa Road.
