Although Insp Chishaka said he was yet to get full details, he said preliminary investigations showed that the driver of the bus was speeding and failed to stop at the rail-road crossing.

“We received a report about a bus that rammed into a train. The driver was reportedly speeding. Police will continue to urge motorists to exercise caution on the roads and will remain in full force on the roads to enforce road rules,” he said.

National Railways of Zimbabwe public relations manager Mr Fanuel Masikati yesterday appealed to drivers of public vehicles to exercise caution when approaching railway level crossings.

Mr Masikati said NRZ was concerned about the number of accidents at railway level crossings.

“We received a report that our engine driver was involved in an accident with a bus belonging to Eagle Liner in Kadoma on Saturday. The accident occurred near Kadoma Hotel and Conference Centre and one person died,” he said.

The bus was reportedly carrying 47 passengers and driving towards Bulawayo from Harare.

Of the 28 who were injured, seven were reportedly treated and discharged from Kadoma General Hospital where 17 are still admitted.

Two others were rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare because of their conditions while one was rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital. Chronicle could not establish their condition yesterday.

“We want to urge drivers of public transport to observe all road signs and stop at all railway level crossings. People are dying because drivers fail to observe signs or stop where they are compelled to do so,” he said.
Mr Masikati said the NRZ will continue to run awareness programmes to conscientise motorists in bid to reduce road accidents involving trains.
