With football clubs these days owned by billionaires and the pitch full of millionaires, fans are having to pay more and more for the right to watch their team in action.
But at one club, you almost have to be a millionaire to afford a season ticket – although it doesn’t even come with a chance to see the likes of Fernando Torres or Wayne Rooney.
No, the most expensive season ticket in British football can be found at London Road, home of Peterborough United. The only thing posh about this lot is their nickname.
The seat has just gone up for grabs for the 2011-2012 season, but at least the club is in with a chance of promotion – currently sitting fourth in NPower League One -but only to the second-tier Championship.
If they’re lucky they could be playing the likes of Ipswich Town and Leicester City, if not it’s another season of Leyton Orient and Yeovil Town.
Fans of the League One outfit are being asked to pay almost ten times the cost of a Real Madrid season ticket for the honour of watching every Peterborough home game, although they would get to eat as many pies as they want and get to be the guest of a club director for an away match.
But fans need not fear being priced out of the club.
The special levy applies to just eight of their seats, and they are all in the directors’ box.
A spokesman said: “We had some seats left in the director’s box so we decided to launch this ticket.
“It is a lot of money and we have no idea what the response will be like, but it’s something different so we hope people will go for it.”
Under the offer ticket holders will be called “honorary directors”.
Fans appear to be in favour of the money-making scheme.
Peterborough United fan Julie Harris said the £15 000 ticket would be “worth every penny”.
The 34-year-old from Peterborough said: “If I could afford it I’d definitely pay that much to watch them, it would be worth every penny.
“I’m sure there will be some rich fans who will grab the tickets.”
The figure outstrips Premiership sides Arsenal, who are asking £1 825; Chelsea £1 695; and Tottenham Hotspur £1 210.
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson’s son Darren is the current boss and famous ex-players include David Seaman.
Past achievements include Football League Division Two runners-up in 2008-9 and Football League Three Tier runners-up in 2007-8.
The season tickets go on sale on Monday, March 7. – Daily Mail.
