Police in Kadoma on Tuesday arrested Gokwe-Kabuni legislator Costen Muguti (MDC-T) and 11 party supporters on allegations of public violence, theft and robbery.
Kwekwe-based lawyer Tapera Sengweni has also been arrested for conduct likely to provoke a breach of peace. He allegedly confronted police after they had arrested Muguti and the MDC-T supporters.
The arrests came as police revealed that Binga Senator Herbert Madolosi Sinampande and Binga North constituency legislator Patrick Sibanda — both MDC-T — could be charged with culpable homicide.
The charge stems from a car accident they were involved in, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of three people along the Harare-Bulawayo Road on Monday.
On the arrests, Deputy police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Oliver Mandipaka said investigations were still in progress.
Chief Supt Mandipaka said Muguti, who was driving an Isuzu KB truck (registration number ABK 4838), went to Waverly bus stop at around 9.30am in the company of his co-accused and parked in the middle of the road.
“A municipal worker who was collecting revenue from motorists at the bus stop advised them to move.
“The MDC-T activists allegedly pounced on the worker and stole US$20 from his pockets and threatened to assault him.
“The group drove to Cameroon Square where they started singing and chanting party slogans while threatening to assault people. They drove to MCK Shop in Rimuka where they removed a 21st February Movement banner pasted on the shop entrance.
“The other activists got into the shop and pulled down two Zanu-PF posters and stole airtime worth US$120. People who were in the shop fled and the rowdy youths got into their vehicle and drove off,” Chief Supt Mandipaka said.
“We will certainly deal with such political activists who are bent on causing lawlessness,” Chief Supt Mandipaka said.
The other suspects are Gilbert Shanhare, Brighton Chibanda, Edifer Vhushoma, Admire Padare, Johnson Chawatama, Clive Madenyika, Raphael Mukiwa, Tichaona Chakanetsa, Brian Ndlovu, Agrippa Silagwa and Amos Maganga.
Police also said Senator Sinampande and House of Assembly representative Sibanda could face arrest on culpable homicide charges.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri said the two were assisting them with investigations.
“The two were travelling in an Isuzu double-cab to Harare and offered a lift to 12 people in Bulawayo, Gweru and Kwekwe,” he said.
They were involved in an accident at around 11.30am. Three people died on the spot while nine others were injured.
“Investigations reveal that these passengers were carried for a fee,” Supt Phiri said.
It is an offence for motorists to ferry passengers in cars that are not public service vehicles.
