Power FM is not a Shona station

Call it a trend or what there are so many people out there who love to listen to the radio as they watch television. I do that at times.

This is usually used as a “pain-killer” so to speak as TV can be boring at times, especially on a sun-drenched afternoon.

A friend of mine used to say that if you need a bedtime story just tune in to a boring television programme and within seconds you will be dozing. You should try it, I am told with ZBCTV it is easier and effective.

So at the weekend there I was listening to Power FM as well as watching TV and I could not help but notice this annoying tendency that is creeping on the airwaves.

Of course, it is not everybody who is doing it but the few that are doing it are messing up the radio, especially Power FM.

I mean there is this nauseating habit of DJs speaking in Shona for the greater part of their shows. And one culprit is none other than my friend Tinashe Chikuse.

The guy appears to have completely forgotten one of the cardinal rules of the station. He goes on and on speaking in Shona as if it were on Radio Zimbabwe.

Last weekend I almost forgot I was tuned in to Power FM after Chikuse and Barny Mpariwa went on and on discussing in Shona when in fact, Power FM is an English station.

Come on guys even the likes of Lionel Mnkandla do not speak in English even when they play English songs. I am aware this is a television column but I believe there is no problem is highlighting what I feel is wrong on air. Turning Power FM into another Radio Zimbabwe is honestly quite appalling.

That being said, I hope Tinashe Chiname or is it Chef Gulaz will sound the warning to his team.

TV5 is the latest channel on DStv’s bouquet and it is a music channel that screens African music. Had my moments when I watched a new video, in fact a collaboration between Youssou N’Dour and Koffi Olomide.

It is one of those channels whereby once you tune in you don’t want to change the dial again.

While there is great disappointment concerning the weekend’s match between Zimbabwe and Cape Verde, I think I was equally disappointed by the sound on DStv.

I am not much of a football fanatic but watching a football match without sound was as boring as the game itself. I don’t know why there is poor sound on DStv especially when you tune to ZBCTV. I guess either ZBCTV or DStv should attend to the problem.
