PREPARATIONS for all the races slated in for Sunday May 3 at Borrowdale Park are at an advanced stage. A total of nine events will be hosted on the race day after the organisers decided to add one more race to the original eight on the card. The Zimbabwe Derby Grade (3) race that was cancelled last week due to a dangerous racing course has been roped in to spice up the day. It is now the feature race.

A cast of eight long distance specialist runners will battle over 2,400M to determine the winner.

Winners of this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Derby Grade (3) race are set to walk away $4,320 richer.

The second, third and fourth placed runners to go over the line will collect $1,440, $900 and $540 according to their order of merit.

Horses that are set to trade iron and leather in this race are Merhaba, Mica point, River Waltz, Spanish Matador, Lincoln Can, Holderstebolder, Tallie Two and Second Light.

According to the racing Mashonaland Turf Club Racing manager, Betina Gurajena preparations are well on course.

“Preparations are going well as of now. We have also decided to host the previously abandoned Zimbabwe Derby Grade (3) race that was cancelled last week.

“For that reason the card will now have nine races with the Derby automatically becoming the feature race.

“All stakeholders will meet today (April 27) for the declaration of jockeys and by the end of the day on Wednesday, April 28 the final list will be out”, added Gurajena.

Last week 161 equines excluding the Zimbabwe Derby were accepted as nominees for all the races making the beginning of one of the many qualifying stages horses have to go through.

Meanwhile, the Mashonaland Turf Club has released a list of all the big guns from Zimbabwe and beyond that have been put in the line of fire by their respective stables for the Castle Tankard race set for May 16.
