President Robert Mugabe yesterday donated a 4-tonne truck to Brunapeg Catholic Mission after he learnt that the mission was facing serious transport challenges. The mission is in Senior Minister of State in the President’s Office, Simon Khaya Moyo’s home area. Earlier this week, the plight of the parishioners drew the President’s sympathy and he immediately dispatched the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Ignatius Chombo to arrange the purchase of the truck using the President’s personal funds.

Within 24 hours, Minister Chombo had approached Croco Motors and bought the truck as instructed.

The parishioners’ luck was on the roll as Croco Motors, in turn, added a Ford Ranger 4×4 pick-up truck to the President’s donation.

At the handover ceremony held at State House in Harare, President Mugabe said it was important for individuals with the means to support communities in their personal capacity.

Chatting to the mission’s priest Fr Innocent Ndlovu comfortably in IsiNdebele, the President recounted his knowledge of Matabeleland South, having spent several years in the region as a teacher at a number of mission schools.

He spoke of the important contributions churches have made in the communities and the need for everybody to support them in their good work of providing education and spreading the Word of God in outlying areas.

Speaking at the same occasion, Minister Chombo recounted the various donations that the First Family has made to Catholic and other churches over the years.

He said that their generosity had reached all corners of the country, including the far south-western outpost of Brunapeg about 115km from Plumtree.

Cde Khaya Moyo, who accompanied Fr Ndlovu, thanked the First Family and Croco Motors for their generosity.

He explained that the mission’s work would now be spread far and wide in Matabeleland South following the donation.

Accepting the two motor vehicles, an elated Fr Ndlovu outlined the work that his mission was doing in Matabeleland South and concluded by handing over three of his own literary works on the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Brunapeg to President Mugabe.
