Prestigious Miss Zimbabwe returns

The crunchy beauty pageant will see at least 35 models going into camp where they are expected to take part in activities ranging from model boot camp, familiarisation tours to rehearsals.
And stakes are high this year for would-be winners who will be announced on the finals scheduled for February 12, the same week as St Valentine’s Day.

This year marks the return of the prestigious Miss Zimbabwe title from the previous Miss Tourism Zimbabwe as the Zimbabwe Tourism Authorities re-brands the pageant.
According to Sugar Chagonda, the ZTA head of communications, the pageant would be split into three categories — Miss Zimbabwe, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and Miss Universe Zimbabwe.

“Whoever is crowned queen will be the Miss Zimbabwe and she will represent the country at Miss World and whoever is crowned first princess will be the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and she will take part at the MissTourism International. The second princess will represent the country at the Miss Universe World,” Chagonda said.
He said the move was in line with modern trends of other pageants worldwide.
“The Miss Talent and Miss Fashion Show will be held on the sidelines of the boot camp but the winners would be announced at the finals,” Chagonda said.

Besides the pageant’s preliminaries there are several wild cards thrown at would-be finalists such as those models who participated in the Miss H-Metro contest as well as contestants from the Diaspora.
Chagonda also promised a fulfilled event that would feature who’s who in the local scene.
“We are still to confirm the line-up of performers but we are hoping to bring all the top local performers including the urban groovers,” he said.

ZTA took over what was then known as Miss Zimbabwe and renamed the event Miss Tourism Zimbabwe which was aimed at using the pageant to market Zimbabwe’s tourist attractions.
However, this year the ZTA have reverted back to the old format by combining all the three major pageants where the top three contestants would represent Zimbabwe at each pageant.
This means that Zimbabwe would be represented by three different contestants thereby increasing chances of winning since each pageant has its contestant.-The Herald
