THE Premier Soccer League (PSL) has revealed that they are negotiating with a number of corporate bodies for sponsorship of cup tournaments. So far only invitational tournaments such as the Bob Super Cup and the ceremonial Independence Cup have taken place with the ZNA Charities final set to feature traditional rivals Highlanders and Dynamos on the cards. The match was initially planned for the PSL mid-season break.

Speaking against the backdrop of growing concerns that this year’s football season might not have any major cup tournaments as 11 matches having been played without any sign of a cup tourney, PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele said there was no need to ring alarm bells as the league was negotiating with potential sponsors.

“Cup games are coming,” said Ndebele. “We are negotiating with potential sponsors, old and some new, but we will not reveal their names at the moment. We are also monitoring the progress being made by our national team’s participation in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.”

The league had set aside some weekends for cup matches in its calendar.

Last season the league had two cup tournaments, the NetOne One Wallet Cup and the Chibuku Super Cup sponsored by the league funders Delta Beverages.

Triangle United shocked fancied Dynamos 4-3 on penalties to lift the NetOne One Wallet Cup and $80,000 prize money while DeMbare banked $50,000.

The 16-team knockout Chibuku Super Cup was lifted by FC Platinum, also after a penalty shootout, beating Harare City 3-1 following a 1-1 stalemate. The Chibuku Super Cup was sponsored to the tune of $500,000.

FC Platinum banked $75,000 while Harare City got $50,000.

The losing semi finalists each got $25,000 while losing quarter finalists received $20,000 and first round losers went away with $15,000 each.
