A 42-YEAR-OLD man from Plumtree died on the spot after he was struck with a golf club by his neighbour for unknown reasons.
Thulani Nleya of Mabatha village, Madlambuzi area, under chief Masendu was allegedly attacked by Nkanyiso Sibanda (22), of the same village.
The incident occurred at around 8PM last Friday at Ndolwane Business Centre.Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident, saying the suspect had been arrested and was assisting police with investigations.
“I can confirm we arrested a man who allegedly struck the now deceased with a golf club for an unclear reason. He is assisting police with investigations and will appear in court soon,” he said.
The body was ferried to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem. Insp Ndebele expressed concern on the increase in cases of murder and assault in the province.
“We are very much worried about increased cases of violence within the province. We urge villagers to put an end to such behaviour because it only lands them in jail.
“When there are misunderstandings, they should learn to consult and engage third parties like family members, police, community leaders and churches,” he said.
A source who preferred anonymity said Sibanda had a misunderstanding with the deceased at the bar where he had been drinking beer throughout the day.
“Clearly something was wrong with Sibanda on that day because we had stopped him from fighting many people at the business centre. We didn’t know what was going on in his head but clearly he was up to causing trouble and he concluded his nonsensical behaviour by committing murder.
“He was on his way to visit his girlfriend when he met up with Nleya whom he pounced on from nowhere. He hit him hard in the face using the golf club.
“As he left the bar, he grabbed a golf club that was inside and upon meeting up with Nleya on the road, he just struck him for no reason and he died on the spot,” said the source.
