THE Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) promotional race was thrown wide open at the weekend when contenders Whawha and Nichrut stuttered.

Nichrut suffered a body blow with a 0–2 defeat to ZPC Munyati, while log leaders Whawha failed to stretch their lead after being held to a goalless draw by Chrome Stars.

Whawha sit on 41 points, just above second-placed Tongogara, who were inactive this weekend, but got three free points on a 3-0 score line over expelled Gwanda United.

Nichrut slid into third place on the table with 38 points.

In other matches, varsity outfit MSU recorded their first win in five matches when they dismissed Black Eagles 2–0 at the MSU Grounds.

Despite the students being 11 points adrift of Whawha, MSU gaffer Themba Chingwena believes his charges can still be counted among the title contenders.

“We are a big team and this win has given us the confidence to compete. We don’t mind about where we are now, but at the end of the season we are going to be among the top teams,” said Chingwena.

His Eagles counterpart Oscar Muvhimi conceded defeat and said their fight was now against relegation.

“We lost to a better team, but we gave it our all. We are a new team in the league and our aim is to ensure that we survive relegation at the end of the season. We are still work in progress,” said Muvhimi.
