R&K: Rocked, knocked out

Sounds are far from being mended.
The duo recently confessed that they were no longer seeing eye to eye, a development that saw them running separate groups under the same name – R&K African Sounds – contrary to reports that they had reunited.
The Herald recently caught up with the two artistes, who poured their hearts out announcing that R&K African Sounds had disbanded owing to irreconcilable differences.
Sagombeto said he has decided to discard the name R&K African Sounds to start his own solo career after efforts to mend ties with his former band mate hit a brick wall.
Chikoore, on the other hand, conceded that they could no longer work as a team, announcing that the group R&K was now dead and buried.
“I am now using the name Shasharume Express after I discovered that I can no longer work with Kevin. He is power hungry. All along I thought our differences were about money, but it’s more than that.
“He wants total control of the band, especially after all the five years that I have been away from the group focusing on my transport business,” alleged Sagombeto.
The musician recently returned to mainstream music after a long hibernation during which he was operating a transport business plying the Zimbabwe-DRC route.
Sagombeto composed and did the lead vocals for hit songs like Tina and Postcard, among others that made R&K African Sounds a household name.
Sagombeto said Chikoore’s behaviour first started manifesting in their early years as a band during which he (Chikoore) was said to have taken the demos of some of their music to a leading recording firm without his knowledge or consent.
“Kevin came and joined my group as a backing vocalist after his elder brother had passed away.
“Before joining my group, he was just a kombi driver. But I was surprised when he took some of our demos to our recording company where an official from that stable asked him for the name of our group and Kevin said it was called R&K African Sounds, incorporating his initial,” said Sagombeto.
Since then, they had no problems until Chikoore decided to take over the group during Sagombeto’s absence.
“From 2006 up to now, relations between us have not been rosy.
“We split twice during this period and the latest development is when I returned and tried to make amends with him but to no avail.
“Kevin was violent during one of our practice sessions and had to be restrained. This is when I realised that I was no longer welcome in the band and decided to do my own thing while he does his own,” explained Sagombeto.
Chikoore, on the other hand, admitted that the group R&K was no longer together, adding that the relations between the two had soured.
He said this was the reason why he did not turn up for a show which Sagombeto held in the Harare Gardens recently.
“I did not turn up because I was doing other things somewhere.
“There is no longer anything called R&K African Sounds because that’s what Rangarirai decided and I agree with him,” said Chikoore.
He added that he was aware his erstwhile partner was now running his own band under a different name, Shasharume Express.
