SPORT, Arts and Culture Minister Andrew Langa has said the continued use of equipment and facilities used during the African Union Sports Council (Ausc) Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games last December is testimony that the games’ legacy had taken root.

Officially closing the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) ball Games at White City Stadium on Saturday, he said President Robert Mugabe’s vision of leaving a lasting legacy in sporting activities in Bulawayo was now bearing fruit.

“These facilities will not be a white elephant as some detractors and doubting Thomases envisaged. I’m happy that the equipment and facilities are constantly being enjoyed by the people of Bulawayo and those from outside Bulawayo,” said Minister Langa.

He also commended Naph and Nash for taking advantage of the worldclass facilities that were revamped last year.

“We’ll not be going anywhere as a country in terms of sport if we can’t nurture talent from a tender age. These kids should get used to worldclass facilities from a young age and only then can we move forward,” he said.

White City Stadium was extensively renovated and a tartan track built, while grass on the pitch was uprooted and new turf laid.

The venue also has an electronic scoreboard and a photo finish timing room. New VIP enclosures were built at White City and Luveve stadiums.

Minister Langa, who is also chairman of the Region 5 Council of Ministers, said the government had invested heavily in infrastructural development in Bulawayo.

“This goes to show that our investment wasn’t a fly by night thing, but looking into the future,” he said.
