THE African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region V Youth Games mascot will be unveiled in Bulawayo on Saturday. The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Andrew Langa, will be the guest of honour at the function meant to give the city’s residents a glimpse of what to expect in December when the competition is held.

The Games local organising committee marketing director, Kennedy Ndebele, confirmed the development.
The mascot is yet to be named and the local organising committee and its marketing body have been working on the issue.

“I can confirm that the official unveiling of the mascot will be held this Saturday,” Ndebele said.
The Games local organising committee (LOC) last month invited proposals for the creative design from about 200 schools around the country from which the mascot was chosen.

Ndebele said all necessary preparations for the mascot’s unveiling ceremony had been made.
“We are expecting a big event since the Games will be one of the few sporting events in the country where we will be using a mascot as a marketing tool,” he said.

A roadshow is scheduled to start at Tredgold Building and move towards the western suburbs, mainly those along the road to Luveve then move to Nkulumane Complex before the procession gets back to the city centre at 5PM.

Currently, the city’s sporting facilities such as Barbourfields Stadium, Luveve Stadium and the City swimming pool are undergoing a major facelift ahead of the prestigious regional competition.

The Region Five Games will attract athletes from 15 African countries and will be held from December 5 to 14.
