A GANG of criminals suspected to be behind robberies at five Bulawayo schools in the last three weeks has allegedly raided Nketa Primary School. The gang got away with a desktop computer and a laptop after allegedly ransacking offices and failing to find cash.

The robbery occurred last week. Details were still sketchy yesterday but sources said the robbers got away with the electric gadgets and the security guard’s cellphone.

“I heard a loud noise in the middle of the night and in the morning I heard robbers broke into the school,” said Sithulile Ngwenya, a resident. Authorities at the school declined to comment.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Province police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the robbery. “I confirm that a robbery took place at Nketa primary school and the robbers got away with a laptop and a computer,” said Simango.

She urged schools to increase security to avoid being robbed.

“We urge schools to bank all their cash on a daily basis. Also schools should open bank accounts so that parents deposit money directly into the bank to avoid handling huge sums of money,” said Insp Simango.

She said schools should hire properly trained and armed security guards.

On Tuesday last week, robbers broke into Mpumelelo Primary school and got away with computers, stationery and an undisclosed amount of money.

Bulawayo Provincial Education Director Dan Moyo said he had been briefed about the incident.

Sources said the robbers destroyed a wall to gain entry into an office.

A Mpopoma resident, Tendai Moyo, said the robbery might have happened at about 10PM as they heard noises emanating from the school.

Last week on Saturday, robbers pounced on Senzangakhona Primary School in Emganwini suburb where they got away with $1,800.

In another case, Sikhulile High School in Lobengula suburb lost undisclosed property and cash to robbers. Robbers also struck Insukamini Primary School in Mabuthweni suburb and got away with goods worth over $300 while on September 12 robbers hit Tategulu Primary School where they stole goods worth more than $1,300.

Police are pursuing leads in the cases.
