Cape Town — Former Bafana Bafana player Benni McCarthy was robbed at gunpoint while having his hair cut in Johannesburg yesterday, according to reports.

Eyewitness News reported that the former soccer player, who had just landed following a flight from Paris, was in Melrose having his hair cut when three armed men walked in and robbed him.

Soccer Laduma reported that a witness inside the barbershop said the incident happened just after lunchtime yesterday.

McCarthy’s manager, Percy Adams, told EWN that the robbers stole his watch, earrings and his wedding ring.

It’s alleged that he was the only one targeted in the shop, while the other patrons were ignored.

Adams said the suspects had pointed a gun in McCarthy’s face and kept telling him to hurry up.

According to KickOff, the three left the scene in a black BMW. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

Gauteng police spokesperson Katlego Mogale told News24 she was still trying to confirm the details of the incident, and would comment later.

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world and celebrities and the rich are usually targeted.

McCarthy’s robbery, however, appears not have affected him much as he was last night a pundit for SuperSport during the Champions League match between Juventus and Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Patrons who witnessed an armed robbery at a Johannesburg barbershop, offered to hand over their wallets and watches, but the gang said they were only there to rob Benni McCarthy.

The ex-Bafana Bafana player had just arrived from OR Tambo International Airport to do television work for SuperSport. A witness told Soccer Laduma that there were about nine people in the shop when three robbers entered.

The witness said that the people were prepared to hand over their wallets and their watches to them, but the robbers said they didn’t want anything from them as they only wanted McCarthy’s stuff. He said it seemed as if the robbery had been well-planned.

Gauteng police have confirmed that McCarthy was robbed of several belongings, including a diamond earring.

“It’s alleged that he had just came back from the airport and was at the barbershop at around 13:00. Three suspects, one armed with a firearm held all patrons at gunpoint,” spokesperson Katlego Mogale said.

“The one with the firearm went to the victim and stole his wrist watch, wedding ring and diamond earring. The suspects then fled in a black BMW with unknown registration. A case of armed robbery has been opened for investigation.”
