SOUTH African gospel artistes Rebecca Malope, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Lusanda Spiritual Group, Tshepiso Motaung, Dumi Mkokstad, Bethusile Mcinga and jazz legend Tshepo Tshola are expected to touch down at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo today ahead of the gospel extravaganza taking place in Gwanda this weekend.

The artistes will be accompanied by one of the organisers of the event – businessman, Justice Maphosa, who is initially from Gwanda but now based in South Africa. The two-day gospel show starts tomorrow afternoon at Pelandaba Stadium.

Lionel De Necker, one of the show organisers, said the South African delegation would be welcomed by officials from the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture.

He said the artistes had been booked at a local hotel in Bulawayo where they will spend a night before proceeding to Gwanda tomorrow.

“The artistes will have an opportunity to engage with fans in Bulawayo. If time permits, they’ll visit some studios to meet some of our local artistes,” De Necker said.

He said preparations for the show, a first of its kind in Gwanda, were going on well.

A state-of-the-art stage is being erected at Pelandaba stadium while more entrances will be opened to cater for the volumes of people expected to attend the free-of-charge gospel fete.

“We’re inviting people from Gwanda and Zimbabwe as a whole to come in their numbers so that we pray and praise God together. This is going to be a big show,” De Necker said.

But, residents in Gwanda fear a possible disease outbreak due to the large number of visitors as the national water authority, Zinwa has, since last week been rationing their water supplies.

Zinwa said water supplies to the town during the weekend could not be guaranteed as they have not been approached, regarding the impending gospel show.

“The Authority however reiterates that in the absence of any payment or commitment to pay on the part of the Gwanda municipality, water supplies to the town cannot be guaranteed,” said Zinwa public relations manager Marjorie Munyonga.

But De Necker assured people of adequate clean water which he said would be placed strategically at different points of the stadium.

Gwanda mayor, Knowledge Ndlovu also said they hoped to resolve the water issue.
