BORDER Strikers extended their lead at the top of the Central Soccer League table to six points after taking advantage of their closest rivals’ slip-up at the weekend.

The Beitbridge-based club dispatched Kwekwe side Silo United 2-0, while second placed Sable Chemicals suffered a humiliating 0-4 defeat to Vumbachikwe.

Border Strikers now sit on 46 points from 20 matches while Sable Chemicals remain rooted on 40 points.

Coach Never Malunga said although they have what seems to be a comfortable cushion at the top of the standings, the race for promotion remains wide open.

“The championship is for us to lose since we’re at the top. Our focus is to continue winning our games to keep our destiny in our hands,” said Malunga.

“We just need to guard against complacency and focus on the job at hand because anything can happen.”

Elsewhere, former table toppers Tongogara were held 0-0 by neighbours Ivan Hoe. The army side topped the league table until midway through the season before faltering.

Shabanie Mine’s hopes of a quick return to the topflight league were dashed when they were edged 0-1 by ZETDC Southern Region at Mkoba Stadium. ZPC Munyati moved into fourth place after beating Chrome Stars 2-1.
