Sadc countries should have proper working rail and air infrastructure to propel economic growth, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development Mr Munesushe Munodawafa said.
In an interview on the sidelines of the Sadc ministers of transport and meteorological services meeting in Victoria Falls yesterday, Mr Munodawafa said officials from Sadc ministries of transport, aviation, railways, roads and maritime including meteorology departments, had come up with a draft document on transport and meteorological services for consideration by their responsible ministers today.

“As permanent secretaries and director generals responsible for transport and meteorological services, we have come up with a draft document for consideration by our Ministers tomorrow (today). Key issues include the opening up of the skies, co-operation between airlines which includes allowing foreign airlines to land into our countries.

“We also spoke on co-operation in the rail sector. Our rail sector is interlinked and as we approach the cooperating partners, we want to have a common position to encourage them to fund our operations not as individual countries but as a region,” he said.

Mr Munodawafa said the movement of goods and people between countries needed a collaborative effort to stimulate growth.
He said on meteorological services, two more countries had attained the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) ISO certification to handle foreign airlines.

“On meteorological services, it is now a requirement that all countries are ISO certified by ICAO and unfortunately only seven countries including Zimbabwe have attained the ISO certificate. All countries are supposed to be certified and we are saying that should be the case in all the countries so that airlines continue landing in all the countries in the region,” he said.
The meeting continues today.
