A 37-year-old Bulawayo man formerly employed as a salesperson by a local firm was yesterday arraigned before the courts for allegedly stealing $40 000 from his former employer. Albert Magwaro of House Number 1 Ethel Road, Sauerstown and formerly employed by Harrison and Hudson Pvt Ltd in Belmont, Bulawayo pleaded not guilty to theft charges when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Mr Crispen Mberewere.
He was remanded to 24 June on $300 bail.

The prosecutor, Mr Jerry Mutsindikwa, said Magwaro was employed as a salesperson entrusted with selling company products and as well as banking money.

The court was told that between April and August last year, Magwaro did not bank company money, which amounted to $40 000.
He allegedly pocketed the money.

The matter came to light when the company director, Mr David Harrison checked the firm’s bank statement and discovered that no banking was made during that period.

He then asked Magwaro for an explanation and the accused allegedly confessed having stolen the money. Magwaro allegedly agreed to repay the money through deductions from his monthly salary, the court was told.

Magwaro, however, left his job without giving notice before he finished repaying the money.

A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
