Secrecy shrouds Katebe’s clearance

The player has been with FC Platinum for the past four weeks and showed good flashes alongside Frank Mulambo and Elvis Moyo.

Katebe, who has been called to the Chipolopolo side on a number of occasions joined FC Platinum as a free agent after Hwange were said to have failed to renew his contract.

Hwange could not avail a copy of his previous contract when challenged yesterday.

“The boy is still our player as we have not issued him with a licence to play for which ever club he wants. At the moment there are few issues that need to be ironed out before we draw up the clearance letter,” said Hwange secretary Burzil Dube.

He was quick to point out that they are not standing in the way of the player but would want things to be done above board.

“Maybe you need to talk to FC Platinum who might be able to tell you more,” said Dube refusing to discuss anything to do with Katebe’s contract, in terms of its length, citing confidentiality.

Contacted for comment FC Platinum secretary-general and spokesman, Benson Wirimai, refused to discuss the issue.

“At the moment we have no comment on that matter but will issue an official position soon,” said Wirimai.

The talented player, who can play at the back as well as a holding midfielder, arrived in the country in 2011 after being convinced to do so by fellow countryman Tennant Chilumba who was Hwange head coach then. He had a dream debut season for Chipangano where he could have easily made it into the elite Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year finalists.

Last year an embarrassing blunder by burly referee Mlindeli Ndebele who wrongly red-carded him for an offence that was committed by Daniel Kamunhenga in a match against Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium, cost him a slot among the 11 best players in the land.

The red card was his second of the season and that effectively ruled him out of the competition.
