I ALMOST suffered a stroke when Leonard Karikoga Zhakata and his band took to the stage at the Miss World Zimbabwe finale held at Mermaids Pool in Shamva last Saturday. They generally looked good, the whole lot, it was the white socks paired with black suits and black shoes that drove me batty!

I can’t begin to explain how appalling it was to see. I was distracted from how good the suits looked and couldn’t help staring at the odd looking stockings.

Just when I thought I’d seen the last of it, hip hop musician Mudiwa rocks up wearing equally odd looking socks.

It was such an anti-climax. The guy has nature on his side — he is good looking. He wore a black shirt, black trousers and a black jacket checkered with beige stripes and black shoes. He was on point.

It was only when he started dancing that the whole outfit was tainted by his beige socks.

We had an argument about this at work the following Monday. The other ‘faction’ argued it was the new trend, wearing different colour socks from the shoes and trousers.

Call me old fashioned but this is a trend I certainly won’t encourage. It was cool when the late musician Michael Jackson, famous for the moon walk, wore the “don’t touch” and those white socks.

It was super cool, captivating actually, watching him dance to hits such as “Thriller” or “Bad”. But no, if you do it, I certainly won’t think you’re cool. I’ll think you need fashion tips and would make you change the stockings before I go anywhere with you.

But Spero Villioti out did himself! The South African-based designer was entrusted with dressing the contestants for the ramp with the best of couture fashion and he didn’t disappoint — it was PERFECTION!

One of the dresses that blew me away was worn by Panashe Pfende. The gown had a yellow bodice and a black and white skirt. Boy did this dress look lovely!

After Villioti’s collection, we might be seeing the return of crochet fashion pieces.

These are usually popular among tourists. Depending on how old you are, I’m sure your mother owned a lot of crochet work which she used to decorate the sofas or place on the tables or other furniture in the house. Watch the space for their return.

On a scale of one to 10, I’d give everyone who attended the event a nine. There was definitely an improvement to what people wore compared to how people looked at the National Art and Merit Awards held earlier this year.

The presenters Emmanuel Manyika and Tich Mawoni looked good — black suit — standard.

Kiki Divaris, Marry Chiwenga, General Constantine Chiwenga, most people looked good.

Maybe we have the specific dress code with strict guidelines on the invitation card to thank for the standards but I believe there is a gradual shift on the fashion scene that will certainly see a continuous improvement in our dress sense.

Keep making the extra effort and set standards for yourself; the important people will notice.

Spot on Yoliswa. We really need to plan in advance to avoid disasters. — Tendai.

Seriously daughters should be allowed to disown their parent if they turn up at their wedding looking like that. That’s not a wardrobe malfunction, that’s a Tsunami, haibo! — Thandie.

Hie . . . The wedding picture in the recent article is hilarious. I see two sides of the story. It’s either the father of the bride has no fashion sense or the son-in-law forgot to buy him a suit. He was simply making a statement, a fashion statement. — Alexander Ndiweni.
