Sikanyika laid to rest

1987 Unity Accord between the revolutionary parties, Zanu-PF and PF-Zapu for national development, Zanu-PF party national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo has said.
Addressing mourners at the burial of Zanu-PF Mashonaland West acting chairman and liberation hero Cde Robert Sikanyika at his Nyarugwe Farm in Raffingora yesterday, Cde Khaya Moyo said the Unity Accord was irreversible.
“Anyone who tries to reverse the Unity Accord consummated and confirmed by Zanu and Zapu at their respective congresses is committing political fraud.
“We are one people with a common surname called Zimbabwe and we should be unflinching in its defence. We should remain united and abhor violence,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo said Zimbabwe and Zanu-PF as a party should gear up for the forthcoming elections as the discord in the inclusive Government was untenable for solid national development.
“We can’t move for long distances with this three-legged creature called the government of national unity.
“It must come to an end,” he said.
As a party, he said, Zanu-PF was prepared to listen to the people and would not brook any imposition of candidates contrary to the wishes and aspirations of the people.
Cde Khaya Moyo said Cde Sikanyika was a principled man who had managed to infuse the ideals and ethos of the revolutionary party into his blood at a much young age.
“Sikanyika was a wonderful and hardworking young man with a promising future which was however, cut short.
“He sacrificed throughout his life for the party and the country.
“What legacy do some people especially in the opposition want to leave when they die – slogans?”
Cde Sikanyika, he said, was a man who could not be swayed by imperialists’ interests.
Zvimba North Member of Parliament Cde Ignatius Chombo said Cde Sikanyika had made tremendous efforts to develop the party and the province.
“Even without the necessary resources, Cde Sikanyika would make an effort to mobilise such resources for party activities in the entire province.
“He, at one time, confided that he would not stand for a parliamentary seat so that he could concentrate on the party’s re-building programme,” he said.
Zvimba East MP Cde Patrick Zhuwao said Cde Sikanyika had managed to unite the province saying the party would ensure that these policies are upheld.
Mashonaland West Governor and Resident Minister Faber Chidarikire said Cde Sikanyika’s track record as a defender of Zimbabwe’s revolution and sovereignty was obvious as he was a proud Zimbabwean.
Cde Sikanyika died in a road accident near Chegutu on Sunday last week and was declared a liberation hero.
He was buried yesterday with full military honours at a send-off attended by thousands of people attesting to his ability to work with the people and his contribution to the country.
Dignitaries who attended Cde Sikanyika’s burial included Cabinet ministers, Zanu-PF Politburo members, provincial chairmen, Central Committee members and Zimbabweans from various sectors.
Cde Sikanyika was born on March 3, 1970 and did his primary education at Katawa primary school in 1978 before attending Mutorashanga High School from 1985 to 1988 for his secondary education.
He worked for the Cold Storage Commission, now the Cold Storage Company, where he honed his political skills as a workers committee member.
Cde Sikanyika rose through the youth structures to become a national member before becoming a member of the Central Committee.
He was later elected provincial secretary for administration and ultimately the acting chairman last year.
Cde Sikanyika is survived by seven children.
