SKYZ Metro FM has revealed extravagant gongs for their inaugural awards with organisers saying they have been overwhelmed by the interest generated among listeners.

The awards will be held at the Large City Hall on Thursday with 19 categories up for grabs on the night.

Pictures of the glass awards that have gold and silver bases were posted on the Skyz Metro FM Facebook page.

Godwin Phiri the station manager said the gongs were custom made in South Africa and each winner would walk away with an undisclosed cash prize.

“The gongs point to the sky symbolising that we want people to have a radio experience that is beyond the sky which is our motto “Beyond the Skyz”.

“The gongs were sourced, custom made in South Africa and they were expensive because we want to set a standard for other award ceremonies. Also we want artistes to be proud of the award,” said Phiri.

“Every award winner will walk away with prize money.”

Since the announcement of nominees last month, people have been voting online and through SMS for their favourite entertainer.

Phiri said voting closed yesterday and they were now gathering data to find winners.

“We had an overwhelming response from people as thousands voted for their favourite artistes. This shows that the awards have generated a lot of interest among our listeners,” said Phiri.

“The preparations are going on well with over 90 percent of what is needed being in place for the night. What we’re waiting for is the awards night. Artistes are rehearsing to perform on the night and each artiste on stage will be paid for their service,” said Phiri.

“I can’t reveal who are going to perform but what I can promise is that they’ll be top drawer.”

Phiri said tickets were on sale at The Vista and Skyz Metro FM offices.
