OFFICIALS from the African Sports Management Association (ASMA) will officiate at the Sports Leaders Institute of Zimbabwe (Sliz) summer camp set for the Eastern Highlands resort of Nyanga in November.

Sliz has invited the continental body to its third edition of the summer camp that will run from November 17-25 at Montclair Hotel, with the hope of getting a different dimension on sports issues.

Speaking at the pre-summer camp meeting that ended in Nyanga yesterday, Sliz director Russell Mhiribidi said they had concluded topics to be tackled at the summer camp which have a bias on physical education and sport (PES), a syllabus that the Government will roll out next year.

“Sport is a growing industry and as such we’ve taken a deliberate ploy to invite ASMA officials to come and share with us issues to do with PES. That’ll include career pathways, among other topics. We’ll also have presentations on sport medicine, how to avoid injuries and sports ethics, which will tackle the age cheating cancer,” said Mhiribidi.

He said his organisation’s goal is to complement Government efforts of developing sport by introducing PES as an examinable subject.

“PES is going to be a game changer for sport in the country and with the largest base of athletes in the country being in schools, there’s need to prepare and train the trainers who in this case are teachers. Our targets for the summer camp are those in the education sector as well as sporting associations because they’re the key people in terms of sport development,” said Mhiribidi.

He encouraged those interested in attending the summer camp to make reservations with his office.

Up to 267 people attended the Sliz summer camp last year in Kariba, with 67 registering at the venue.

“This time around we’re preparing for an estimated 400 participants and we’ve seen how these summer camps have attracted interest from many people because of the value they bring. To make our planning easy, we’ll be happy if people can contact our office and make bookings,” said Mhiribidi.
