THE Zifa Southern Region board led by Musa Mandaza is close to clinching a lucrative sponsorship deal with a leading retail outlet in Bulawayo.
The retail outlet is heavily involved with social responsibility programmes within and outside Bulawayo.
Sources within the regional body said the deal will see the league’s outstanding players being handsomely rewarded at the end of the season while trophies and medals will also be given to leading teams.

“The deal is almost as good as done and very soon announcements will be made,” said the source.
The source gave the name of the retail giant but pleaded we don’t identify it lest negotiations collapse.

Mandaza, who came back to mainstream football after winning elections held early this year did not deny nor confirm the imminent arrival of a sponsor, the first since Buscod Supermarkets that was sourced by the Gift Banda-led board.

“We don’t have any sponsor at the moment but yes we are talking to potential sponsors and when all is done we will come back to you.  In fact Chronicle will be the first to know,” said Mandaza.

He said they are engaging several companies not only as Southern Region but as a block with the other three regions after realizing that some corporates want to have a national outlook.

“Meetings have been held among regions as we bid to have a single sponsor for all the regions because some companies want to have a national feel instead of regional, just like when we used to have Savanna Tobacco in 2008,” said Mandaza.

He said a sponsorship document has since been drafted and will be presented to various corporate bodies in the country.
Meanwhile, Southern Region league action resumes tomorrow with all 14 teams in action across the region. Topping the weekend clashes is the tie between championship favourites Tsholotsho and Bulawayo’s New West. The match is set for Raylton Grounds.

Lizwe Sweswe, the rural based Tsholotsho FC coach has managed to assemble a side that has stood against the best in the league and are now firm favorites to bring premiership football to Tsholotsho. Despite the loss of Kuda Machazane who joined championship chasing Highlanders during the second transfer window Iziqholo zeZhwane as still well on course to land the big one, all along the preserve of city teams.

Another interesting duel will be at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hwange when another championship contender Technosphere plays host to Victoria Falls based Trumus.
