SPORT, Recreation, Arts and Culture Minister Makhosini Hlongwane will officiate at the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) general assembly that starts in Gweru today.

The general assembly is expected to draw 150 participants and will evaluate the 2017 editions of the Paralympic Games held in April in Bindura and the National Youth Games hosted by Matabeleland North Province.

The SRC revealed that the National Youth Games and Paralympic Games will from next year be held in the same month to make planning easy.

Acting SRC director-general Joseph Muchechetere said the motion to combine the National Youth Games and Paralympics will be moved at the meeting to be held at Chaplin High School.

“The Minister will officially open the general assembly in Gweru. The general assembly is more of an evaluation process of the games and highlighting the problems encountered so that we can plan for better Games next year,” said Muchechetere.

“The SRC strategy towards improving both the National Youth Games and the Paralympic Games is to combine the two, have them both held in the month of August. That will ensure smooth planning for the games, meaning immediately from hosting the other games focus quickly switches to the other. The general assembly will also seek to strategise on how best we can uplift sport in the country as well as hosting of the games.”
