A FORM Three pupil at Bulawayo’s Emganwini Secondary school died after eating green mealies and sugar cane. Khuawelo Nyathi,16, died at Mpilo Central Hospital on Friday where he was admitted.

The boy’s father, Silas Nyathi told The Chronicle that his son ate the sugar cane at a family farm in Figtree on Friday.

He said the boy complained of severe stomach cramps but was not taken to hospital because he seemed to have recovered.

Nyathi said the cramps later resumed with more intensity, forcing the family to rush him to hospital.

“They ate mealies and sugar cane before they came back and he started complaining of severe stomach pains. He was rushed to Mpilo hospital where he died later that day,” he said.

“l’m very pained with the sudden death of my son but l’ve taught myself to accept it, there’s nothing we can do about it because it’s God’s will”.

Some family sources alleged Khuawelo ate poisoned food that was earmarked for a close family member.

They also claimed that the boy had gone to the farm with other members of the family.

Nyathi dismissed the claims saying the correct information is the one the news crew got from him.

“It’s a good thing you came to us as a family so that you don’t publish rumours. The boy is my son and l’m the one who knows what happened,” he said.

Nyathi said the family was awaiting post mortem results before setting a burial date.

Mourners are gathered at 4543 in Emganwini suburb.
