THE official launch of the inaugural four-team Supa Power tournament featuring Zimbabwean giants Highlanders and Dynamos as well as two Botswana teams will be held at the Francistown Sports Complex tomorrow.

The football jamboree is set for August 19 at the same venue where Bosso and DeMbare will join Tafic and Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

“It’s all systems go now for us and we are excited about this event. We are also planning a similar launch in Zimbabwe so as to build-up the tempo ahead of the one-day tournament, which has received the blessings of both nations’ football associations,” said Joy Setshedi, founder of the Joy Foundation.

She said there will be no prize money for the winners this year, but the winning side will receive a trophy and medals while all participating players will each get P5 000 in appearance fees.

“The Foundation has undertaken to foot transport and accommodation costs for the teams. Since this is an inaugural tournament, we are not going to have any prize money, but we are hoping to have that in our next edition as we are consulting with our partners,” she said.

Matches will be played at the 26 000-seater Francistown Sports Complex Stadium and the cheapest ticket has been pegged at P60, with the most expensive at the VIP going for P750.

The aim of the tournament is to raise funds for the development of a sports academy in Mochudi, Dinkgwana Ward.

Setchedi told the Botswana media recently that her Foundation had acquired a piece of land measuring 5.6 hectares to develop a multi-facet sports facility for nurturing of boys and girls.

The tournament will provide a rare opportunity for a number of Zimbabweans based in Botswana to watch the country’s biggest sides possibly clashing on foreign soil.

Highlanders have previously clashed with Caps United on foreign soil when the two sides flew to the United Kingdom in the early 2000s and the Bulawayo giants prevailed 1-0.
