HARARE-based Support Unit booked a place in the semi-finals of the men’s African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Zone VI Club Volleyball Championships with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Malawi’s Green Eagles in Bulawayo yesterday.

Support Unit were quicker off the blocks and took the first two sets with ease. However, Eagles rose from their slumber to win the following two sets to level the game at 2-2. The explosive encounter went into the dreaded deciding set and Support Unit held their nerve to win the set 15-12.

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) got the bragging rights after they won the all-Zimbabwe quarter-final encounter against Naba 3-1. The local clash lived up to expectations, with both sides exhibiting quality volleyball. The victory ensured UZ joined Support Unit in the semi-finals.

In an earlier encounter, the University of Johannesburg stunned defending champions Police VI from Botswana 3-1 to also secure a semi-final berth. The South African side was in top form as it sailed to a remarkable victory.

In the women’s division, Harare City secured a place in the semi-final after they cruised to a 3-0 over Zambia’s Supper Select. Harare City have been impressive in the tournament and carry the nation’s hopes of winning the championships.

Bulawayo’s young Spartans side fell in the quarter-final stage to favourites Kamplits from South Africa. Spartans will, however, have a lot of positives to carry from the championships after fielding a young inexperienced side that did well.

Support Unit found the going tough against Botswana Defence Forces VI and lost 3-1.
