Support Unit volleyball team leaves for African Club Champs

ZIMBABWE Confederation of Africa Volleyball Region Five Games silver medalists Support Unit were due to fly out of the country last night to participate in the African Club Championships to be held in Tunisia.The African Club Championships are expected to start today and run until March 17 in the city of Sousse.

Coach Itsanang Abu Basuthu said the team has put a lot of hard work preparing for the event.

“The team put in a lot of hard work preparing for the club championships, we faced a lot of challenges but I’m happy we went through the challenges as a team, a quality that I cultivated in them.

“They played as a team in all their practice games. I think that’s our stronghold and we plan to use it over our opponents,” he said.

According to Fédération Internationale de Volleybal (FIVB), the Club Championships to be held in the North African country are considered to be one of the most attractive volleyball tournaments in Africa.

Winners of the competition will represent Africa in the 2015 Men’s World Club Championships which will be held in Brazil from May 5 to 10.

“Support Unit earned their place to represent the country in the African competition and we wish them all the best,” said Ringisayi Mupondera the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association secretary-general.

“Support Unit did very well in the Region 5 Club Championships in Mozambique last year despite losing in the final.  We have confidence in them,” he said.

Esperance of Tunisia are the defending champions in the 2014 edition of the event, with 18 clubs taking part in the competition. They went on to represent Africa at the World Championship.
